The Day of Victory over the Genocidal Regime is celebrated in Cambodia every year on January 7. It marks the end of the Khmer Rouge regime, a dark period in Cambodia’s history. From 1975 to 1979, the Khmer Rouge, led by Pol Pot, caused the deaths of nearly two million people through forced labor, starvation, and violence. On January 7, 1979, Cambodian forces, supported by Vietnamese troops, liberated the capital, Phnom Penh, bringing an end to the brutal regime.

This day is an important reminder of Cambodia’s resilience and recovery. Ceremonies are held across the country to honor the victims and survivors. People reflect on the importance of peace and unity. Although it is not without controversy, as opinions about this day vary, it remains a symbol of hope and the country’s determination to rebuild after years of suffering.
